TorkbusterTD Shows Significant Shock Reduction for Operator

A Delaware Basin operator recently drilled back-to-back pads that tested the TorkBusterTD tool in a direct A/B comparison. Utilizing Ulterra bits across 6 wells – this operator saw a reduction of shock of up to 42%, with an maximum increase in ROP of 20%.

Overview

A Delaware Basin operator recently drilled back-to-back pads that tested the TorkBusterTD tool in a direct A/B comparison. Utilizing Ulterra bits across 6 wells – this operator saw a reduction of shock of up to 42%, with an maximum increase in ROP of 20%.

Recently, an operator in DelawareBasin took on the TorkBusterTD challenger and drilled 6 wells across 2 pads to test out how well the tool could perform in a head-to-head comparison. What they saw at the bit, and further up the drill string was something that no one expected.

In the first pad of the trial, they drilled three wells and tested the TorkBusterTD tool on two of the three. Equipped with dual sensors on the TD tool to evaluate direct effectiveness in each well above and below the tool, they found that simply having the TD tool present in the drill string reduced shock at the bit by an average of 19%, with a peak reduction of 27% shock. What’s more, the improvements in shock reduction extended up the drill string, reducing as much as 13% above the PDM motor and immediately ahead of the MWD.

On the second pad, they found the same benefits but at a greater magnitude! This time around, the peak shock reduction at the bit was 42%. This lead to an average shock reduction across the tool at the MWD of 18%. Proving that not only did the tool provide a safer drilling environment for all BHA components, but it improved far more drilling dysfunctions than just HFTO. Working to reduce the wear and tear seen by the motor and MWD at the same time.
