Overview
For the first offshore run with Split Blade in Vietnam, a major operator utilized Ulterra’s 12.25″ SPL519 to drill the 12.25″ section in the Lower Miocene formation in the Cuu Long Basin. During the run, the operator achieved high-velocity cuttings evacuation to promote high penetration rates in the 12.25” section. The 520 m section was drilled to section depth with an average ROP of 39.10 m/hr.
About SplitBlade Technology
Split Blade technology creates the split shape of the primary blades that have a rotational offset. The R&D team created drill bit geometry that enables multiple channels of fluid to flow through the same blade and junk slot. Typically, cuttings from the cone of the bit wash down the blade face during drilling only to accumulate around neighboring cutters, which wastes drilling energy and eventually leads to severe cutter damage. Instead, the split design creates high-velocity cuttings for clean evacuation from the cone of the bit to support high-volume cuttings evacuation from the shoulder cutters during drilling.
