One of the key contributors to the improved performance and the primary differentiator of the FastBack™ steel body PDC bit design is the specialized geometry, which is designed to enhance the delivery of mechanic specific energy (MSE) into the rock. The new blade top geometry allowed Ulterra to simultaneously increase both potential top-end ROP and durability.

In the endless quest for faster penetration rates, longer runs and better steerability, manufacturers have introduced cutter configurations that counter vibration; bits that drill a small hole to relieve rock stress, then widen the hole to the desired diameter; and designs that turn conventional wisdom on its head by increasing ROPs with smaller cutters. Consider Ulterra’s CounterForce™ cutter configuration, which engineering project manager Aron Deen says originated from machining. “We decided to see what would happen if we adapted the tool’s staggered tooth concept to a drill bit. Because the tool reduces vibration, we hypothesized the bit would offer increased durability and higher penetration rates.” That hypothesis was proven correct. The ROP increase varies by application, but generally falls within 10-50 percent. “Because it involves rearranging components rather than using experimental parts, the bit costs the same as its predecessors and the operator’s risk is extremely low.”

Unlike traditional PDC bits, the cutters of this patent-pending, step-change advancement in new PDC technology work together to lower lateral vibration and increase crack propagation. In a Permian Basin Wolfcamp lateral, a CounterForce run finished the lateral a dramatic 42% faster ROP than direct offsets, saving the operator an entire day of drilling. ESCO Corporation, a leading designer and manufacturer of highly engineered wear products for the mining, infrastructure, power generation, aerospace and industrial industries, today announced that it has completed the previously announced acquisition of all the outstanding equity interests of Ulterra Drilling Technologies, L.P. for $325 million in cash.
Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, Ulterra designs and manufactures polycrystalline diamond compact drill bits used in the construction of oil and gas wells. The acquisition of Ulterra provides ESCO with entry into the oil and gas industry and complements ESCO’s existing businesses in the development of wear solutions.

Ulterra has opened a new stock point in Hammond, LA. The new center is strategically located just 46 miles east of Baton Rouge and 58 miles north west of New Orleans and will support drilling activity in Mississippi, Alabama, South Louisiana and Gulf of Mexico. Ulterra’s new Gulf coast operations will be led by Rob Smith, an experienced and respected drill bit supplier. He will oversee the new location, which will offer a full line of matrix and steel body PDC bits designed specifically for Gulf Coast applications. Staffing the Hammond stock point will be experienced personnel with an intimate knowledge of local drilling. Utilizing the latest analytical tools, the Ulterra staff will ensure all customer requirements are clearly understood and the correct bits are applied to optimize their operations. In addition, Ulterra will soon open a stock point in Lake Charles, LA. With the addition of the Hammond and Lake Charles stock points, Ulterra now has six people, each with over 30 years of experience, supporting our customer’s Gulf Coast and Gulf of Mexico operations.
